Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, is facing controversy over its alleged provision of user data to Russian authorities. According to an investigation by Reuters, Binance provided Moscow with information on a $700 transfer made by Yuri Belenkiy to the Azov Regiment of the Ukrainian army in 2025.

The company had previously stated that it had ceased operations in Russia in 2023, but it appears to have been in contact with the Kremlin last year. Binance provided details on Belenkiy's identity, including his date of birth, address, telephone number, and a copy of his Russian passport and Bulgarian residence permit.

Belenkiy was arrested in September 2025 and charged by the Russian Investigative Committee in October for allegedly aiding acts of terrorism. Russia has been targeting citizens who support Ukraine, with human rights organizations claiming that dozens have been tried and convicted for sending donations to Kyiv.

The situation raises questions about Binance's transparency and accountability. Legal experts point out that the company was under no obligation to provide information to Russian authorities, as they have no jurisdiction. Binance claims it acted in accordance with the law and only responded to legitimate requests for cooperation.
