Binance Accused of Sharing Client Data with Russian Authorities
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, shared client details with Russian authorities to aid in charges against a Russian IT specialist who donated to Ukrainian fundraising campaigns.
The documents show that Binance handed over information about Yuri Belenkiy's transactions to Russian law enforcement officials. This data was used as evidence in the case against him, which alleges he sent more than $700 to the Azov Regiment and the Ukrainian military between January 2023 and March 2024.
Belenkiy is currently in a Russian jail awaiting trial on charges of terrorism financing. His lawyer did not respond to questions about Binance's role in the investigation.
The case raises concerns that Binance may have breached European Union data protection laws, which prohibit the disclosure of personal data without a court order and compliance with stringent provisions.
