Binance Customer Data Tied to Alleged Terrorist Financier
A Russian IT specialist, Yuri Belenkiy, is accused of financing terrorism through cryptocurrency donations to Ukraine. The case against him has raised questions about how Binance handles customer data and responds to law enforcement requests.
Belenkiy allegedly sent cryptocurrencies to organizations linked to the Ukrainian armed forces between January 2023 and March 2024. Russian authorities claim that these transactions were made through blockchain addresses that were linked to Belenkiy's profile using information provided by Binance.
The exchange maintains that it responds to legal requests from law enforcement agencies worldwide in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and data protection requirements. However, the case highlights a distinction between ceasing commercial operations in a country and ending relationships with its law enforcement agencies.
