Binance Data Leak Exposes Vulnerability in Cryptocurrency Anonymity
The case of Yuri Belyenko, a Russian citizen with a Bulgarian residence permit, raises questions about the protection of personal data on major international cryptocurrency exchanges. In September 2025, he was detained at a Moscow airport and charged with 'financing terrorism' due to cryptocurrency transfers in support of Ukraine.
Binance provided the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation with information that linked specific transactions to Belyenky's identity, including his date of birth, address, phone number, passport details, and transaction history. The human rights project 'First Department' claims that the scope of the information provided was even broader.
This incident highlights the importance of evaluating sensitive transactions conducted through centralized crypto services with caution. Even if a company has announced its withdrawal from a particular market, it may still be subject to lawful requests from law enforcement agencies.
