Binance's Chief Security Officer Jimmy Su has downplayed the threat of quantum computers breaking cryptocurrency cryptography, stating that current quantum computers are not yet capable of doing so. In an August 11 post on Binance's website, Su explained that while quantum computing is a long-term security concern, it is not an immediate threat to users. He emphasized that the industry needs to prepare for the eventual transition to post-quantum cryptography.

Su pointed out that Google research has estimated that breaking a 256-bit elliptic curve could eventually require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, but noted that no quantum computer capable of doing so currently exists. He also highlighted that ordinary security threats such as phishing and weak wallet security remain more urgent concerns for users.

Binance is taking steps to prepare for the transition to post-quantum cryptography, including planning to deploy quantum-safe vaults in 2026 and native post-quantum account authentication on its mainnet in 2027. Su also cautioned against adopting untested products that claim to be quantum-proof, as this could introduce more security risks.
