Binance Founder Warns of Hidden Security Risks in Acquiring Smaller Exchanges
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has warned the crypto industry about hidden security risks associated with acquiring smaller exchanges. When a larger platform buys out a smaller one, it inherits not just users and order books, but also legacy vulnerabilities, outdated code, and potentially compromised infrastructure.
The issue is that smaller exchanges tend to have weaker security measures, making them more attractive targets for hackers. In fact, CZ noted in 2020 that smaller exchanges are disproportionately targeted by hackers due to their weak security.
CZ emphasized that larger exchanges maintain significantly better security protections than their smaller counterparts, which makes intuitive sense when considering the economics involved. However, the problem is that these security measures are often 'baked into architecture decisions made years earlier,' making it costly and difficult for an acquirer to remediate these issues.
CZ's warning carries weight given his own experience with Binance's rapid growth and subsequent regulatory challenges. His memoir, Freedom of Money, explores the challenges faced by Binance during its meteoric rise and the regulatory scrutiny that followed.
