Binance Hands Over Client Data to Russian Authorities Amidst Controversy

The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has found itself in a scandal after it was revealed that they handed over client data to Russian authorities. The data was for Yuri Bilenky, a Russian IT specialist who donated money to support the Ukrainian military. Bilenky had transferred $742 worth of cryptocurrency from January 2023 to March 2024 to the Ukrainian army and the 'Azov' unit.

Binance exited the Russian market in October 2023 but still responds to law enforcement requests, as per their policy. After receiving the data from Binance, Russian investigators uncovered nine more transactions made by Bilenky, bringing the total number of charges to 15.

Human rights defenders have raised concerns that transferring personal data without proper international procedures may contradict European data protection legislation.
