Binance Pushes for Harmonized Crypto Rules Across Africa
Binance is calling for clearer cryptocurrency regulations in Africa as the region's market continues to grow. Larry Cooke, Binance's Africa spokesperson, emphasizes that regulators should strike a balance between managing risks and fostering innovation.
Cooking cites Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa as examples of how different countries approach crypto regulation. While South Africa requires a license for operating cryptocurrency businesses, Ghana provides a sandbox environment where companies can test new products under regulatory supervision. In contrast, Kenya has rules specifically for virtual asset providers.
Binance believes that better coordination among African regulators could simplify the process for companies to operate across borders while allowing each country to set its own requirements. Cooke also highlights the potential benefits of blockchain technology in facilitating cross-border payments and stablecoins supporting digital transactions.
Cook stresses the importance of user education as scams and phishing remain a concern in the crypto space. Binance sees broader adoption relying on regulation, consumer awareness, and cooperation between crypto firms and financial institutions.
