Binance Recaptures Crypto Futures Crown from CME
Binance has regained its dominance in Bitcoin futures open interest, surpassing CME Group for the first time since late 2023. This reversal marks a significant shift in the institutional market's focus on crypto derivatives.
For two years, CME Group held more Bitcoin futures open interest than any other venue, cementing its position as a hub for institutional trading. However, this lead has been eroded over the past five months, with CME's open interest falling by 40% in eight months to around 103,000 BTC.
The decline can be attributed to the collapse of the basis trade on CME, which was the main driver of institutional participation in Bitcoin futures. As the basis spread compressed and the yield on CME's Bitcoin futures fell below that of traditional fixed income, institutions began to unwind their positions.
Despite this, the capital did not disappear from the market. Instead, it migrated to offshore perpetual contracts, which offer more flexible margin requirements and a continuous liquidity mechanism. Binance has become a major beneficiary of this shift, capturing around 40% of perpetual futures activity in the first quarter of 2026.
