Binance Staff Detained Amid Financial Crimes Probe
Binance employees in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been detained and questioned by authorities despite their company's strong ties to Abu Dhabi. According to a report, two Binance staff members were taken into custody at Emirati airports after being pulled aside by officers.
The detentions are part of an ongoing investigation into financial crimes, but the exact nature of the allegations against the employees is unclear. Binance has stated that none of its staff were involved in any wrongdoing and were simply questioned as part of routine inquiries.
The company has a significant presence in the UAE, with Abu Dhabi's Financial Services Regulatory Authority granting it three licenses on December 8, 2023. These licenses allow Binance to operate under Abu Dhabi's regulatory framework, and the company has cited them in explaining its handling of foreign police requests.
However, the relationship between Binance and the UAE government is not without controversy. The company has been fined by Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority for allowing an unlicensed local firm to funnel millions of dollars into its accounts.
The detentions have raised concerns among Binance employees about their safety and security in the region. In response, the company approached Emirati officials this month seeking assistance and expressing worries about employee well-being.
