Binance Transforms into Compliance-Focused Powerhouse Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Binance's meteoric rise to becoming the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange has been marked by a significant shift in its approach. The platform, founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao (CZ), was initially known for its high-performance interface and low fees, which undercut traditional competitors.
However, as the exchange grew, it faced increasing regulatory scrutiny from around the world. In November 2023, Binance pleaded guilty to U.S. anti-money laundering (AML) and sanctions violations, agreeing to a $4.3 billion penalty.
The settlement led to a major overhaul of the firm's leadership, with CZ stepping down and serving a four-month sentence in 2024. The exchange has since rebranded itself as a compliance-first fortress, with CEO Richard Teng at the helm.
