Binance's Exit Accelerates Regulatory Reset in Europe
Erald Ghoos, CEO of OKX Europe, says Binance's Android app has been removed from Google Play in many European markets. This move follows Binance's withdrawal of its MiCA application in Greece and indicates that platforms without an EU license are 'heading for a certain fate'.
Before the transition deadline, around 1,100 to 1,300 firms operated under national regimes across Europe; today, just over 300 hold a license. The regulatory reset is affecting the economics and product range of licensed exchanges.
OKX reports a 160% increase in EU app downloads after Binance's withdrawal and says inflows from Binance-linked accounts grew more than eightfold during this period. However, Finance Magnates found that on-chain holdings for OKX and Binance moved in the same direction over two weeks, suggesting market-wide price swings rather than a one-directional shift.
As MiCA-compliant stablecoins are required to be listed in the EU, Tether's delisting has led to a shift towards USDC. Euro-denominated stablecoins remain a smaller category and their adoption is still building.
