BIP-110 Backers Consider Radical Proof-of-Work Algorithm Change
The BIP-110 minority chain has stalled after only two blocks were mined due to its high difficulty level inherited from Bitcoin. The chain, which split from Bitcoin on August 8th, had nearly no hashpower behind it, making it difficult for miners to find new blocks.
Some proponents of the BIP-110 proposal are now considering a drastic measure: changing the proof-of-work algorithm used by the minority chain. This would allow it to escape dependence on the SHA-256d mining industry that overwhelmingly remained with Bitcoin after the split.
Luke Dashjr, a longtime Bitcoin developer and maintainer of the Bitcoin Knots software, has been weighing new PoW options in the Discord server's #strategic channel. Participants have discussed various algorithms, including RandomX, KT256, BLAKE3, and CPU or GPU mining.
