BIP-110 Breakaway Chain Fails to Gain Momentum in Mining Power
A breakaway Bitcoin chain, launched by supporters of BIP-110, has stalled after mining just two blocks in about eight hours.
The fork began at block 961,632 on Saturday and failed to gain enough support to become a viable alternative to the main Bitcoin network.
BIP-110 aims to change how Bitcoin handles certain types of data by temporarily blocking ways of embedding images, text, and other non-financial data into transactions. Supporters argue this would reduce congestion on the network and lower fees for regular users, but critics see it as a form of censorship.
The breakaway chain inherited Bitcoin's difficulty setting and would need roughly 350 days to reach its next adjustment, which is a significant disadvantage compared to the main chain that adjusts every 2,016 blocks or about every two weeks.
