BIP-110 Faces Its Moment of Truth
A contentious proposal called BIP-110 is set to shake Bitcoin's foundation as it nears a potential chain split. The Reduced Data Temporary Softfork aims to limit data elements in transactions, which proponents claim would slow blockchain growth and reduce node operating costs.
With 41 supporting blocks among 1,674 counted in the current period, signaling for BIP-110 stands at just 2.45%. The mandatory window is projected to begin on August 8 at approximately 5:16 p.m. EDT. If implemented, this could lead to a minority chain with its own transaction history, although it would lack infrastructure and economic legitimacy.
BIP-110 supporters argue that limiting non-financial data is a moral duty, while critics claim that forcing a split without broad miner and economic backing adds unnecessary risk. Major mining pools, including Foundry, Antpool, F2pool, and Viabtc, have refused to signal for BIP-110.
