BIP-110 Fork Failure Shows Why Replicating Bitcoin's Early Conditions Is Almost Impossible
The recent failure of BIP-110, a proposed fork from the Bitcoin network, has highlighted the challenges of recreating Bitcoin's original launch conditions in today's market. According to Giacomo Zucco of Plan B Network, the failed fork was an 'educational' example of the obstacles facing a new network.
The proposal, backed by longtime Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr, aimed to curb spam activity by making consensus changes. However, it ultimately resulted in only a small fraction of nodes splitting from the main Bitcoin network, with a handful of blocks being produced before the fork stalled.
Zucco noted that the episode showed how quickly a supposedly fair launch can become centralized under the influence of a small number of decision-makers. He also argued that modern incentives and deliberate disruption make it difficult to reproduce the conditions of Bitcoin's early years, which he referred to as its 'immaculate conception'. BIP-110 had been intended as an educational example, but it ultimately became mired in controversy over issues such as governance and the roles of nodes and miners.
