BIP39 Unlocks Hardware Wallet Portability
When you store your cryptocurrency assets on a hardware wallet, it's natural to wonder if you're truly in control. The answer lies not in marketing claims but in technical specifications that have been publicly available for over ten years: BIP39, BIP32, and BIP44.
BIP39 describes how a random seed value is converted into a memorable sequence of words, with 128 to 256 bits of entropy producing twelve to 24 words. The actual seed value is computed using the PBKDF2 function, which is fully deterministic and doesn't contain any device or vendor identifiers.
This means that entering the same words on a different device implementing the same standard will produce the same 512-bit value, providing a mathematical guarantee of recoverability. However, this guarantee comes with limitations: typing errors can go unnoticed, and there's no correction facility.
