BIS Anchors Government Data on XRP Ledger for Secure Verification
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has developed and tested a system to anchor government economic and banking data on the XRP Ledger. The project, described in working paper 1374, aims to provide a secure and transparent way for statistical agencies to prove the authenticity of their published data.
Currently, there is no native way to verify where a file originates using SDMX (Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange), which is used by several organizations including the ECB, IMF, OECD, World Bank, and ILO. The BIS' solution uses the XRP Ledger as a public notary, ensuring that once a record is written, it cannot be edited silently.
The system works by generating a cryptographic fingerprint for each release, which is then stored permanently on the XRP Ledger. This allows anyone to verify a downloaded file against the ledger record without having to contact the publisher's servers.
