BIS Prototype Showcases XRP Ledger's Low-Cost Authentication Potential
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has released a working paper that explores the potential of XRP Ledger as an authentication layer. The prototype, which was first made available online on August 1 and released as BIS Working Paper 1374 on September 2, uses XRP Ledger to anchor a summary of fingerprints of official statistics.
The system works by turning a statistical file into a cryptographic fingerprint, combining those fingerprints in a Merkle tree, and writing the root into the memo field of an XRPL transaction. The returned SDMX file embeds the transaction reference, ordered fingerprints, and a signed verifiable credential, allowing a recipient to rebuild the root and compare it with the ledger.
The BIS paper acknowledges that XRPL serves as a timestamped public notary for the commitment, rather than holding the economic figures. The open-source implementation is described as experimental, unsuitable for production, and unmaintained.
