BIS Taps XRP Ledger to Secure Economic Statistics

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has explored an innovative use case for the XRP Ledger. The organization used the blockchain to create a public verification layer for economic statistics, providing a permanent record that can verify whether a dataset has been altered.

The BIS identified a problem in verifying official statistics: how can users trust that a downloaded file is the same as the one published by the issuers? With the increasing use of digital platforms and automated systems to consume data, including AI tools, there's concern about providing accurate source information.

To address this issue, the BIS created a prototype that uses the XRP Ledger's ability to store cryptographic information. A proof of concept was built on XRPL's DevNet, utilizing the ledger's low transaction costs and rapid confirmation times. The test achieved a median publication latency of three to five seconds and verification took one to two seconds.

The BIS notes that this experiment remains a proof of concept, not an official announcement, but it demonstrates a new use case for the XRP Ledger network, which has faced criticism about its lack of utility. The same architecture could be extended to other structured reporting formats, including XBRL.
