BIS Tests XRP Ledger for Verifying Official Financial Data
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has published a working paper that explores the use of XRP Ledger to verify the origin and integrity of official financial data.
The BIS researchers generated cryptographic fingerprints for each dataset, combined them using a Merkle-based structure, and recorded the summary value on XRP Ledger. This process allowed users to verify both who issued the dataset and whether its contents were changed.
The test showed near real-time verification, with publication taking around three to five seconds and verification requiring roughly one to two seconds. A single on-chain entry could cover thousands of datasets, making blockchain fees negligible once records were batched efficiently.
The BIS experiment is a proof of concept and does not mean central banks have adopted XRP or that official statistics are moving permanently onto XRPL. However, it demonstrates the potential for public blockchains to support data provenance, regulatory reporting, audit trails, and machine-readable financial information.
