Bison Bank Becomes First Portuguese Bank Under EU's MiCA Regulation
Bison Bank has become Portugal's first bank to operate as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the European MiCA regulation. This move follows its earlier approval in 2022 as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP), and it solidifies Bison Bank's position at the forefront of financial innovation.
The CASP license allows the bank to offer custody, exchange, and advisory services for crypto-assets under a compliant framework. This expansion is part of Bison Bank's on-chain strategy, which includes supporting new products like stablecoins and future real-world asset tokenization solutions.
António Henriques, CEO of Bison Bank, stated that the bank's vision is to integrate digital assets into traditional banking services. With its CASP license and robust financials, including a 2025 recurring net profit of €5 million and a CET1 capital ratio of 38.5%, the bank is well-positioned to accelerate this strategy.
Bison Bank closed 2025 with significant growth, doubling its previous year's recurring net profit. Its leadership in digital assets was recognized with the 'Portugal's Best for Digital Assets' distinction at the Euromoney Global Private Banking Awards 2026.
