BitBox Brings Lightning Payments Directly to Mobile Wallet
Swiss-based Shift Crypto has integrated Bitcoin Lightning Network support into its BitBoxApp mobile app, allowing users to manage their long-term bitcoin holdings and make fast and cheap lightning payments from a single app.
The new feature is currently available in public beta and aims to simplify the use of the Lightning Network. This means that users no longer need a separate app for lightning payments and do not have to store additional recovery seed phrases on their device.
The BitBox solution separates long-term holdings from daily spending, with the former remaining on the main Bitcoin network (on-chain) and the latter being handled by the mobile wallet. Users can easily transfer smaller amounts to their Lightning wallet, which can then be used for everyday payments without needing to physically connect or sync the hardware wallet.
The background technology is based on the Breez SDK and Spark technology, a statechain-based system that enables bitcoin movement off-chain. This reduces the need for users to operate their own lightning nodes, create channels, or manage liquidity.
