Bitcoin Adoption Slows Down at El Salvador's El Zonte
The village of El Zonte in El Salvador, known as Bitcoin Beach, is witnessing a decline in everyday Bitcoin transactions. According to Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core developer, local businesses are receiving fewer BTC payments, with one restaurant reportedly only accepting its first Bitcoin payment in a month. Staff at the establishment stated that customers have started preferring card-based payments.
This shift emphasizes the distinction between holding and spending Bitcoin. Many individuals are treating their BTC as investments, waiting for price increases before using them, which Atack described as 'counter-economic'. This behavior hampers the growth of a functioning Bitcoin economy, as it requires people to spend their money to create value.
The adoption of cards over BTC is also attributed to businesses' difficulties in accepting cryptocurrency due to its price volatility. Traditional payments offer a more comfortable and familiar experience for merchants. Despite this decline, Atack still views El Salvador as a pioneer in Bitcoin adoption and regulation.
