Bitcoin and Gold Rally as US Debt Concerns Mount
The recent surge in both Bitcoin and gold has been a notable development in financial markets. The two assets have historically moved in opposite directions, but the past week saw them rise together. Bitcoin's price skyrocketed by $15,000 within 48 hours to almost reach $80,000, while gold surged to nearly $4,600 per ounce.
According to analysts at the Kobeissi Letter, this simultaneous move may indicate the return of the 'debasement trade', where investors buy scarce assets such as gold and Bitcoin to protect against currency debasement. The precious metal had previously dipped below $4,000/oz earlier this summer after peaking at $5,600 in January, while Bitcoin was rejected at $97,000 in January and slumped to a multi-year low at under $58,000 by July 1.
Gold has solidified its position as the world's largest financial asset, with a market cap of over $32 trillion, surpassing gold's addition of $4.5 trillion in the past few days alone. Bitcoin, on the other hand, has surpassed Tesla and is now the 12th-largest, with a market cap of $1.550 trillion.
The catalyst for this rally appears to come from the US Treasury market, where Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the government would at least double its purchases of long-dated US government debt. This move has pressured the greenback and revived concerns about America's fiscal position, with investors concerned about growing debt, persistent inflation, and policy intervention.
