Bitcoin and Gold Soar as Treasury Actions Spark Selloff in Dollar
The value of Bitcoin and gold surged this week after a series of events led to a selloff in the US dollar and bonds. The Treasury Department's announcement to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys on Wednesday sparked a reaction, causing investors to move towards alternative assets. This resulted in a jump in the value of Bitcoin and gold.
The price of Bitcoin had been stuck between $62,000 and $67,000 for weeks, but it blasted through that upper level after Treasury yields fell and the dollar declined. The Treasury's actions negatively affected the money investors could make on US bonds and the dollar, boosting the value of Bitcoin instead. This led to a surge in liquidations of bearish crypto positions, adding fuel to the rally.
President Donald Trump also weighed in on the matter, calling on Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which would keep the US ahead of China in terms of cryptocurrency regulation. The CFTC Chair, Mike Selig, vowed to use every tool available to advance Trump's agenda. This support from the government has helped to boost investor confidence in cryptocurrencies.
The national debt surpassed $40 trillion on Wednesday, adding to concerns about inflation and the value of the dollar. However, investors appear to be betting that the government will continue to print more money, leading to a surge in alternative assets such as gold and Bitcoin.
