Bitcoin and Gold Surge as Investors Flee US Dollar
Bitcoin and gold saw a significant surge in value this week, as investors flocked to alternative assets amid rising concerns over inflation and government debt.
The move was triggered by the Treasury Department's announcement on Wednesday that it would significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, or government debt. This move was seen as an attempt to calm bond markets after a sustained sell-off, but raised questions about whether the government is trying to push borrowing costs lower despite inflationary pressures.
The national debt surpassed $40 trillion on Wednesday, further fueling concerns over inflation and the value of the US dollar. As a result, investors funneled their money into alternative assets such as gold, which rose more than 2% on Wednesday, and bitcoin, which jumped more than 20% this week.
President Donald Trump's comments on crypto legislation also contributed to the surge in cryptocurrency prices. On Wednesday, he held a conference at the White House where he called on Congress to pass the Clarity Act, saying it would 'keep us ahead of China.' The CFTC meeting on Thursday examining ways to ease crypto rules further fueled speculation that the government is taking steps to support the industry.
The surge in bitcoin prices was also driven by the closure of bearish positions, with over $4 billion in bearish crypto positions liquidated during the rally. This added fuel to the rally, potentially triggering still more liquidations as prices climbed.
