Bitcoin-Backed Lending Market Could Reach $1 Trillion Within A Decade
A $1 trillion market for Bitcoin-backed lending is emerging in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, and it's already gaining momentum. According to research from digital-asset lender Ledn, this market could reach its target within a decade, driven by surging borrower demand and institutional infrastructure.
The drivers behind this growth include the surge in long-term BTC holders unwilling to sell their assets, as well as the global precedent set by gold-backed lending, which already exceeds $200 billion annually. This trend mirrors how mortgage markets developed, where homeowners unlocked liquidity from an appreciating asset without triggering a taxable sale.
Bitcoin's market cap is now above $1.5 trillion, making it the world's seventh-largest asset by that measure. Its trading volume has also improved dramatically, with a 24-hour spot volume of $24.9 billion on May 24, 2026, exceeding the daily turnover of many mid-cap equity indices.
The market is structured into two tracks: centralized lending platforms (CeFi) and decentralized lending protocols (DeFi). While CeFi lenders operate custody-based models with interest rates ranging from 8% to 14%, DeFi lending protocols take a different approach, allowing users to post wrapped bitcoin as collateral through smart contract systems.
