Bitcoin-Backed Loans on Track for $1 Trillion Market
A $1 trillion market for bitcoin-backed loans is emerging within the Bitcoin ecosystem, according to research from digital-asset lender Ledn. The forecast suggests that this market could reach its target within a decade, driven by surging borrower demand and the development of institutional infrastructure.
Ledn's research points to three key data points supporting the $1 trillion forecast: the growing number of long-term Bitcoin holders, their preference for borrowing against their position rather than selling it, and the precedent set by gold-backed lending, which has surpassed $200 billion annually. The market is seen as similar to mortgage markets, where homeowners can unlock liquidity from appreciating assets without triggering a taxable sale.
The research identifies strong borrower demand from long-term Bitcoin holders across North America, Latin America, and the Middle East, with loan-to-value ratios typically set between 30% and 50% to buffer price volatility. Ledn co-founder Mauricio Di Bartolomeo notes that the firm's customer base is composed of holders who acquired Bitcoin years ago and have no intention of selling.
The infrastructure for institutional bitcoin lending is maturing rapidly, with custody, risk models, and regulatory frameworks converging in 2026. The market splits into two tracks: centralized lending platforms (CeFi) and decentralized lending protocols (DeFi), each carrying distinct risk profiles and target customers.
