Bitcoin-Backed Loans on Track for $1 Trillion Market
A hidden credit market worth $1 trillion is emerging within the Bitcoin (BTC) ecosystem, and most retail investors are unaware of its existence.
New research from digital-asset lender Ledn forecasts that bitcoin-backed loans could reach this threshold within a decade. The growth is driven by increasing borrower demand and the development of institutional infrastructure.
Bitcoin recently broke out of its longest period of underperformance against traditional assets, according to Mark Connors, former Credit Suisse global head of portfolio strategy. This shift restores BTC's appeal as high-quality collateral, with a market cap above $1.5 trillion and trading near $76,600.
The infrastructure layer for institutional bitcoin lending is maturing rapidly, with custody, risk models, and regulatory frameworks converging in 2026. DeFi lending protocols and centralized lenders are competing for the same collateral pool, creating a bifurcated market with distinct risk profiles and yield structures.
