Bitcoin-Backed Mortgages Launch via Coinbase Partnership
Better Mortgage and Coinbase have partnered to offer Bitcoin-backed mortgages in the US. This innovative product allows borrowers to use their BTC as collateral for a down payment, without having to sell it. The program combines a Fannie Mae-backed mortgage with a separate down payment loan secured by the value of the pledged Bitcoin.
The borrower does not need to worry about a decline in the price of BTC triggering a margin call or changing the loan terms. However, if they fall 60 days behind on payments, Better can sell the pledged Bitcoin. The program is available to US residents with a verified Coinbase account who meet Better's standard requirements for credit history, income, and other financial criteria.
This new product comes as crypto assets are gaining recognition in the US mortgage market. In June 2025, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) directed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to develop proposals that would allow cryptocurrency held on regulated US exchanges to be considered when assessing mortgage borrowers' risk.
