Bitcoin-Backed Mortgages Now Available in the US
Crypto-backed mortgages have entered the market through a partnership between Coinbase and Better Mortgage. The service, which uses Bitcoin as collateral for down payments, is now available to borrowers in the US.
The Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) has approved this new funding method, allowing individuals to keep their Bitcoin holdings without having to sell them or face margin calls.
Coinbase One members can receive a rebate of up to $10,000 when closing on a mortgage. This benefit is part of the companies' effort to cater to younger homebuyers who hold significant amounts of cryptocurrency.
The median age of first-time homebuyers has increased to 40 due to high interest rates, record home prices, and limited inventory, according to Chief Technology Officer Ziggy Jonsson at Better Mortgage. By allowing borrowers to pledge their digital assets in the mortgage underwriting process, Coinbase is expanding pathways to homeownership while preserving long-term investment positions.
