Bitcoin Backing Debate Reignited as Peter Schiff Weighs in on Energy Consumption
Bitcoin's value backing argument has resurfaced in a debate between Peter Schiff and Bitcoin maximalist Jeff Swanson. The exchange highlights an age-old question about what gives money its value.
Peter Schiff, known for his advocacy of gold, argued that the energy consumed by miners leaves nothing behind to support the asset. According to Schiff, energy vanishes the moment miners consume it, so there is no leftover value to back Bitcoin.
Swanson countered with three pillars supporting the backing case: energy expenditure, a fixed issuance schedule, and record computing power. However, Schiff dismissed the premise outright, focusing only on the energy claim.
The debate's timing coincides with declining hash rate due to redirected power toward artificial intelligence and miners leaving the network this year. The Bitcoin price has also remained stagnant near $79,600, down 1.5% over 24 hours.
