Bitcoin Blasts Past $80K Amid Inflation Fears
Bitcoin's price briefly surged past $80,000 on Tuesday, extending its gains from last week's cryptocurrency rally. The surge comes as investors show renewed appetite for riskier assets amid concerns over inflation and rising government debt.
Crypto-related stocks like Robinhood, Coinbase, and Strategy saw significant increases, with 6.9%, 4%, and 3.4% rises respectively. Paul Howard, senior director at Wincent, noted that retail participants and smaller wallets are taking positions in Bitcoin ahead of a potential continued ascent.
Howard expects Bitcoin to potentially reach $100,000 by year-end, but warns that the rally may not last due to a lack of fuel to propel it further. Nic Puckrin, founder of Coin Bureau, agrees that Bitcoin is vulnerable to a sudden reversal and points to the Federal Reserve's upcoming keynote at Jackson Hole as a key factor in determining the rally's longevity.
The Treasury Department's pledge to double its debt buybacks has also contributed to the surge, with US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds drawing in $1.92 billion in net inflows last week, their largest weekly haul since October.
