Bitcoin Bounces Back from Middle East Tensions
Bitcoin made a swift recovery after briefly dipping below $77,000 on Monday due to rising Middle East tensions. The cryptocurrency quickly rebounded towards $79,000 as market capitalization neared $1.58 trillion and dominance over altcoins rose above 58.5%. This resilience is particularly notable given the broader geopolitical reaction, which triggered a classic risk-off pattern without prompting sustained crypto selling.
Bitcoin's August performance has been unusually strong, with it up over 24% this month, its best August since 2017 and largest monthly gain since November 2024. Meanwhile, Brent crude climbed above $90 per barrel after the strikes, while stock markets showed mixed or weaker performance.
Derivatives data suggests traders remain active without building an aggressive directional bet. Twenty-four-hour futures volume more than doubled to $183 billion, while open interest stayed near $136 billion, indicating churn rather than substantial fresh positioning. The market is seeing heavy turnover, but leverage has not expanded enough to signal an obvious speculative breakout.
