Bitcoin Bounces Back: Geopolitical Conflicts Don't Always Spell Doom

Bitcoin's performance in times of geopolitical uncertainty has been studied extensively, and recent data reveals that its price reacts differently to various global conflicts. Unlike traditional safe-haven assets like gold, Bitcoin tends to initially fall before recovering rapidly and resuming its trend.

Analysis of significant events since 2016 shows that war is not a reliably bullish or bearish factor for Bitcoin's price. The cryptocurrency's scarcity and independence from any single government make it an attractive hedge against currency or capital freezes, but its value can be affected by changes in risk appetite, inflation, liquidity, and the dollar.

Examining the 10-year price data of Bitcoin during major conflicts, researchers found that while the first day of trading often reflects fear and a decline in value, longer-term trends are driven by factors such as rates, dollar strength, ETF inflows, and the broader crypto cycle. The study analyzed various events, including the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Hamas conflict, and US-Iran tensions.

One notable example is the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war, where Bitcoin's price initially fell but recovered strongly over time. Similarly, during the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict, Bitcoin's value declined in the short term before rebounding significantly.
