Bitcoin Braces for Fed Rate Hike on September 16
Bitcoin's price is expected to drop if the Federal Reserve raises interest rates on September 16, but the size and durability of the decline will depend less on the quarter-point move itself than on what Chair Kevin Warsh signals about the path ahead.
The Fed has strengthened its case for tightening since July, with August payrolls rising by 162,000 and unemployment remaining at 4.1%. Market expectations for a September rate hike are surging, now up to a 53% chance.
A hawkish hike could trigger a deeper deleveraging across crypto, while a mild 25-basis-point hike with balanced guidance is the most likely scenario, resulting in an initial Bitcoin drop of roughly 1%-5%. However, if Warsh emphasizes data dependence and does not validate a sequence of hikes, the move could become a classic sell-the-rumor, buy-the-news event within several weeks.
