Bitcoin Breakout Tied to Regulatory Hopes, Not Macro Fears
Citi analysts have weighed in on Bitcoin's recent breakout from its trading range, attributing it to positive U.S. regulatory developments rather than 'macro debasement' concerns.
According to Citi, the price response lagged behind the Treasury's buyback announcement, with yields rising faster than Bitcoin's. This suggests that the 'digital gold' narrative wasn't the main driver of the move.
The analysts believe U.S. regulatory news is a more durable explanation for the breakout, and are now watching whether sentiment reverses the stall in ETF inflows seen since last October's liquidations.
A pickup in flows over the next month would signal investor recognition of a positive regulatory backdrop, even without certainty around market-structure legislation. Citi currently assumes no net ETF flows in its base case.
