Bitcoin Breaks $71,000 as Multiple Factors Converge on Crypto Market
The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant surge on August 20, with Bitcoin breaking above $71,000 and Ether gaining strongly. The rally was sparked by a combination of factors, including a technical breakout in Bitcoin, major short liquidations, improving risk sentiment, and renewed U.S. regulatory optimism.
Bitcoin had been trading within a six-week range between $62,000 and $66,900, creating a market expectation of continued range-bound behavior. However, when the price broke out of this range, it rapidly adjusted, with roughly $3 billion in short liquidations within 24 hours contributing to the speed of the move.
Liquidity and bond markets also played a role in the rally, as changes in long-term Treasury markets improved risk appetite. The Federal Reserve's July policy decision maintained the federal funds target range at 3.5%, 3.75%, while market reporting linked part of the latest improvement in risk appetite to developments in long-term Treasury markets.
Renewed discussion of U.S. digital-asset regulation added another supportive factor, with President Trump urging Congress to move forward with the Clarity Act following a meeting with crypto-industry executives. Bitcoin moved above $70,000 amid the renewed policy focus, with investors often reacting positively to the prospect of clearer rules.
