August 2026 was a month to remember for cryptocurrency markets, marked by significant price rallies and increased institutional interest. Bitcoin broke above $80,000, supported by stronger risk appetite, a weaker dollar, and U.S. Treasury bond-buyback plans.

The move also led to renewed institutional demand, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recording nearly $1.92 billion in net inflows between August 17 and 21. BlackRock's IBIT was the leader in weekly inflows, and total August ETF inflows later crossed $3 billion.

Altcoins also saw significant gains, with Zcash reaching an eight-year high of over $800 and briefly approaching $900. The rally was fueled by Grayscale's plans to advance a U.S. Zcash ETF.

The meme coin sector experienced a resurgence in activity, with DOGE, PEPE, PUMP, BONK, and PENGU seeing renewed interest. This highlighted the speed at which speculative money can rotate through crypto markets.
