Bitcoin Breaks $80K Barrier, Enters New Market Regime
Bitcoin's recent price surge above $80,000 may signal a fundamental shift in the market, according to Andy Baehr, Managing Director of GSR. After months of weak trading activity, Baehr believes that Bitcoin has entered a new regime.
The combination of returning ETF demand, improving liquidity, and aggressive short liquidations is evidence that the market structure has become more supportive, Baehr argues. Institutional demand has changed sharply, with spot Bitcoin ETFs attracting almost $2 billion over five trading days in August.
The turnaround is visible in recent U.S. ETF data, which shows that Bitcoin funds took in $517 million on Aug. 19 and $606 million the following session, helping weekly inflows approach $1.9 billion. The rally was also amplified by bearish positioning, with roughly $1.06 billion in short positions being liquidated in a single day.
The U.S. Treasury's decision to expand buybacks of long-dated government bonds has improved market liquidity and initially pushed long-term yields lower, contributing to Bitcoin's breakout. However, the macro backdrop remains complicated, with U.S. federal debt recently crossing $40 trillion.
