Bitcoin Breaks Free from Tech Stock Ties, But Fed Influence Remains

Bitcoin's recent performance has shown a significant shift in its relationship with US technology stocks. In July, Bitcoin outperformed the Nasdaq-100, rising by about 8%, while the index fell nearly 7%. This divergence marks a major change from the close link between Bitcoin and tech stocks that has characterized their movement in recent years.

The correlation between Bitcoin's price and the Nasdaq-100 has been decreasing over the past few months. In May, the 90-day correlation was as high as 0.89, but by July 28, it had fallen to 0.43. This lower correlation suggests that factors specific to the crypto market are becoming more important in determining Bitcoin's price.

Analysts point to several reasons for Bitcoin's recent strength, including renewed buying through spot ETFs and improvements in its leverage position. The return of ETF inflows has been a key driver of Bitcoin's recovery, with US spot Bitcoin ETFs recording five straight days of inflows in July. This trend continued in August, with the week ending August 7 seeing total inflows of $853.5 million.

However, despite these positive developments, Bitcoin remains sensitive to changes in interest rates and expectations for Fed policy. The crypto market's relationship with the Federal Reserve is complex, and even if BTC is developing more crypto-specific drivers, interest rates, inflation, and Fed decisions can still have a major impact on its price.
