Bitcoin Cold Wallet Leads to Murderous Home Invasion in Mexico
Mexico has witnessed another tragic incident in the cryptocurrency space as a family of four was brutally murdered over a Bitcoin cold wallet believed to hold millions. The victims included Camilo Séptimo keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero.
The suspects, identified as Diego Sebastián and Gerardo (last name omitted due to Mexican privacy rules), allegedly entered the family's home in search of a cold wallet containing 'million-dollar amounts' in Bitcoin. According to prosecutors, Sebastián used his relationship with Meléndez to gain access and offered Gerardo 2 million pesos ($118,000) to help obtain the crypto.
Cold wallets are devices that store private keys controlling access to funds, but they do not eliminate physical threats as criminals can target holders directly. This incident is one of many recent cases of physical attacks on crypto holders, with Chainalysis documenting 46 violent crypto attacks through late June resulting in over $30 million stolen.
