Bitcoin Consortium Aims to Safeguard Against Quantum Computing Threat
Bitcoin's security is under threat from quantum computing, and nine major companies have formed a consortium to defend against this risk. The Bitcoin Security Consortium includes industry names like Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, and Galaxy, as well as Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, and ARK Invest.
The group has pledged $15 million to fund research into quantum-resistant signature schemes, which will ensure the network can transition safely before 'Q-Day' arrives. Q-Day is estimated to be around 2030, when a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically crack current encryption.
Project Eleven's estimate of 6.9 million vulnerable bitcoins accounts for such exposed addresses. By pooling resources, these firms aim to accelerate the development of post-quantum cryptography and safeguard sensitive data.
