Bitcoin Consortium Pledges $15M for Quantum Defense Fund
Nine major financial and crypto companies have formed a consortium to fund research into Bitcoin's security against quantum computing threats. The group, called the Bitcoin Security Consortium, has pledged $15 million over three years to support open-source development focused on defending against potential future attacks from powerful computers.
Members of the consortium include BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy. Each member will directly fund researchers and developers they choose to support, without any centralized allocation or direction from the group.
The group's motivation is clear: a quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography does not yet exist, but it could potentially threaten up to 6.9 million BTC ($450 billion) stored in vulnerable addresses. Any fix would require coordinating changes across wallets, exchanges, miners, and users, which takes years.
BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robert Mitchnick, said the core developers 'do incredibly important work' and that more funding will be made available for Bitcoin's long-term security.
