Bitcoin Consortium Pledges $15M for Quantum Security Push

Nine major financial and Bitcoin companies have joined forces to support long-term security in the Bitcoin ecosystem. The consortium, which includes BlackRock, Coinbase, and Strategy, has pledged a combined $15 million over three years for developer funding, research, and public education.

The group's initial focus is on post-quantum cryptography, addressing potential risks from future wallet vulnerabilities. Quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's current cryptography do not exist yet, but developers face a lengthy process involving research, testing, and adoption across wallets, exchanges, miners, and users.

Each member will direct their contributions independently, rather than placing funds under consortium control. This approach allows for flexibility in supporting existing researchers and developers already working on Bitcoin security, without creating a separate technical team.
