Bitcoin Crushes August Blues with Strongest Performance Since 2017

Bitcoin has just wrapped up its strongest August performance since 2017. Over the course of the month, it gained approximately 25-30% in value, with prices soaring from early-August lows near $62,000-$64,000 to briefly surpassing $81,000 before settling around $78,000-$79,000 by August 30.

This surge marks a significant reversal for the cryptocurrency, which typically struggles during this time of year. Since 2013, Bitcoin's median return in August has been approximately negative 7%.

Several factors contributed to the rally, including expanded liquidity expectations tied to US Treasury bond buyback results and the influx of institutional capital through regulated spot ETFs. The buying activity was so intense that it triggered a record-setting cascade of short liquidations on a single day, amounting to $2.75 billion.

Despite this impressive monthly gain, Bitcoin remains down roughly 28-33% on a year-to-date basis as of late August. It is still trading well below its 2021 peak near $126,000, with a current price sitting about 37% below that level.
