Bitcoin Cycle Shift: Institutional Participation and Regulatory Clarity
Bitcoin's price has dropped significantly since its all-time high in October 2025, falling from over $126,000 to around $64,000. This decline is often compared to previous crypto winters, but experts say this cycle is different due to increased institutional participation and regulatory clarity.
Dovile Silenskyte, Director of Digital Assets Research at WisdomTree, notes that the current correction has already done much of the hard work in stripping out excess from the previous rally. She also points out that the selloff has coincided with continued institutional participation and improving regulatory access.
The strongest argument for a different cycle is ownership. Strategic holders such as exchange-traded products, exchanges, public companies, governments, private companies, and decentralized finance now hold around 20% of the total Bitcoin supply.
These holders may behave differently from retail and crypto-native participants in earlier cycles, as they are not trying to trade every move. To the extent that they accumulate rather than recycle supply back into the market, the available Bitcoin tightens.
