Bitcoin Decouples from Global Liquidity as M2 Gap Widens

The long-standing relationship between Bitcoin's price and global liquidity has finally broken down. According to data from TFTC, the global M2 index has been rising steadily since January 2024, but the BTC price has not followed suit. In fact, the gap between the two indices has grown significantly, with the global M2 index increasing by about 39% and the Bitcoin index declining roughly 17% over the same period.

The investment landscape has changed dramatically since 2024, with investors now having access to a wide range of blockchain-based financial products. These markets offer characteristics that Bitcoin does not, such as generating yield or providing equity exposure, which could be why more global liquidity is not translating into a corresponding rise in the BTC price.

The introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs has also contributed to this decoupling. Institutional investors can now gain regulated exposure to BTC through these ETFs, which means that demand for Bitcoin can be influenced by institutional positioning and traditional market conditions, rather than just global liquidity.
