Bitcoin Decouples from Tech Stocks as Inflation Fears Drive Investors Towards Hard Assets
Grayscale, a leading cryptocurrency asset management firm, has observed that Bitcoin's correlation with technology stocks is decreasing while its relationship with gold is increasing. According to Grayscale, Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with the Nasdaq Composite has dropped from around 60% to 33%. At the same time, its correlation with gold has risen from nearly zero to nearly 50%.
This shift reflects a macroeconomic environment where investors are focusing on 'debasement trades' due to rising debt and persistent deficits. The term 'debasement' was mentioned in over 1,500 articles last week, the highest weekly count since January. This renewed interest is attributed to Treasury actions under Secretary Scott Bessent to expand buybacks of long-dated bonds.
Grayscale believes that as fiscal imbalances grow and investors question the long-term value of fiat currencies, Bitcoin can serve as a 'scarce' and 'liquid' alternative alongside gold. Macro strategist Lyn Alden suggests that Bitcoin may be nearing an inflection point against gold as its investor base matures. However, Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, notes that Bitcoin's correlation with gold is specific to certain regimes and that it behaves as a different asset in other times.
